Bluegrass and more are back for 2021 at the BIC Center with The RFD Boys. They are a part of America’s bluegrass tradition and a well established Emerald Isle tradition as well with full a songbook and a seasoned stage presence. It’s foot stompin’ fun for music fans all ages.
The RFD Boys have been delighting Ann Arbor audiences since 1969 (and Island audiences since 2013) with their fabulous musicianship and sly, exquisitely timed between-song humor. With an appearance on the cover of Bluegrass Unlimited, with songs recorded by the likes of the Country Gentlemen, and with performances alongside bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley, the RFD Boys are a part of America’s bluegrass tradition. One of Michigan’s most durable musical ensembles, they’re very much a local tradition, too.
In October 1969, when the RFD Boys played their first concert together, they were still U-M students, and bluegrass was as unknown here as cable TV in the Ozarks. Today it’s as common as e-mail in Appalachia, and the RFD Boys are still going strong. Though they’ve turned their degrees into full-time, offstage careers, their music has taken them all over Michigan and the Midwest, and as far away as Germany, France, Australia and Malta. In the last three decades they’ve shared stages with a who’s who of bluegrass and country musicians, from Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley to Ricky Skaggs and Randy Travis.
The RFD Boys are:
Charlie Roehrig – guitar and vocals
Willard Spencer – banjo and vocals
Paul Shapiro – bass and vocals
David Mosher – fiddle, mandolin, and vocals
Dan Roehrig – guitar, mandolin, and vocals
